Are Mouth Guard Really Necessary?
Run! Jump! Speed! If you or your kids are involved with sports, bravo! Wonderful for the body, mind and spirit. Yet you must also know that there is a significant relationship to sports injuries and those that are sustained to the mouth/facial portion of your body. The good news is these injuries are almost always preventable through the use of protective mouth guards.
Consider the following statics according to the AADA:
- Athletes are 60 times more likely to sustain dental injuries when not wearing a protective mouth piece.
- The cost of a protective mouth guard is significantly less than the cost to service a damaged or lost tooth
- The chance of a dental injury for each athlete is about 10% each season and 33-56% during their life.
- You only have 1 hour to preserve a lost tooth during an injury.
- Estimates show that mouth guards prevent about 200,000 injuries each year at the high school and college football levels.
The American Dental Association recommends wearing custom made athletic guards for the following sports: football, hockey, baseball, boxing, wrestling, bike riding, volleyball, skiing, soccer, basketball, skateboarding, water polo and weightlifting.
